As far as ecosystems and wildlife go, South Africa’s is amongst the most diverse in the world. From tigers and rhinos on land, to sharks, whales and dolphins in the water, the country has it all. Surfers in the region will be privy to many experiences that few others will ever get the chance to encounter. However, one which may trump them all is a recent encounter a bunch of locals had with a Penguin.
Alan Van Gysen, of Now Now Media, is a renowned surf photographer and filmmaker based in Cape Town, who has seen and done it all when it comes to surfing in the area. However, nothing comes close to his recent experience with a penguin at Noordhoek Beach.
“From sharks to seals to whales and everything in-between, Cape Town in South Africa is renowned for wildlife encounters in the water. But it’s rare for surfers to see a penguin, let alone share a few waves with one – until this little guy came along.”
This rare and unique moment was captured in Alan’s latest YouTube edit, which shows the penguin attempting to befriend surfers in the water by jumping on their backs and attempting to hitch a ride.
“It was one the most incredible wildlife experiences I’ve ever had in my 25 years of photography. You know, down this beach, and around Cape Town, I’ve had interactions with whales, seals, dolphins, and even sharks, but I’ve never experienced anything quite like this…I’m pretty blown away to be honest.”
