When you hear the word ‘Sumba’, a lot of people instantly associate the island with the luxury resort ‘Nihi’ which is home to a private wave, originally known as Occy’s left, where you can pay up $21,000 USD per night to surf there. However, there is so much more to the island, which is enriched with local culture and history.
In her latest YouTube edit, Australian surfer Lilliana Bowrey stays at the Alamyaha Boutique Hotel on Sumba, and along with her partner Elliott Paerata Reid, the pair score a fun looking right hand amid a tropical cinematic backdrop.
The crew also spend time immersing themselves in the Sumbanese culture by surfing with the local kids and visiting a nearby village. One thing you’ll instantly notice is how tall each roof is on every house. This is due to the Sumbanese people’s cultural belief that the high pitch of the roof symbolizes a connection to the spiritual world, allowing for easier access to ancestral spirits;Â essentially, the higher the roof, the closer one is to the spirit realm, which is a central aspect of Sumbanese culture
