Sumba is one of the most wild and unique parts of Indonesia. Made famous by the wave ‘Occy’s left’ which is now privatised as part of the world renowned Nihi Resort, the island has much more depth than five star luxury villas which cost thousands each night to stay in.
Sumba’s coastline is rugged and untouched. The majority of the locals identify either as Christian or Merapu, which is a religion unique to Sumba and features an ancient belief system associated with animalistic rituals where buffaloes and pigs are often sacrificed.
One man whose taken the road less travelled across Sumba is Tom De Souza. Tom’s multiple part series ‘The Indo Motorcycle Diaries’ featured in our mag over the last two years and he’s now releasing YouTube edits to compliment the series.
His latest clip sees him deep in Sumba connecting with the locals, scoring empty waves and gaining an understanding of their beliefs.
