Shipstern Bluff is one of the more evil looking waves in the world. The Tasmanian slab features a number of steps in its wave face which make for elevator drops, heavy wipeouts and some of the most dramatic moments in big wave surfing.
During a recent winter session at Shippies, filmmaker Tim Bonython described the conditions for capturing the Tasmanian devil as ‘perfect’. “For me as a cinematographer, the light, the conditions, and the scale of the day came together perfectly — capturing Shipstern Bluff at its most raw, cinematic, and unforgettable.”
“On this mission, we were treated to a flawless bluebird day. 18-year-old up-and-comer Lex O’Connor, Genji Pitt, and big-wave icons Russell Bierke & Tom Myers led the charge, while locals Zeb Critchlow and bodyboarder Cohen Thomas pushed the limits on this notorious slab.”
