As far as bucket list adventures go, cycling and surfing across New Zealand is a pretty big one to tick off. When Johanna Brebner set off on her $50 marketplace bike armed with a board rack attachment, she had no little to no plan. Her mission was to reconnect with her roots and document it along the way.
Three months and more than 2,000 kilometres later, that slow-burning adventure became ‘Spaces In Between’. After touring the film across Australia’s east coast earlier this year, the needessentials-produced documentary has now been released online, meaning you can finally watch the full journey.

We caught up with Johanna when the film was still in its infancy in the editing bay. She spoke about the highs, the lows and why moving at 20km/h completely changed the way she approached surfing. Johanna was even kind enough to share some tips for anyone else who fancies doing something bat shit crazy. The pace of the journey forced her to embrace missed swells, unexpected encounters and the simple act of travelling through a place instead of racing across it.
That philosophy sits at the heart of Spaces In Between. The film is much more than your standard surf edit and reveals what you can learn when you ditch the accelerator and start pedalling.

If you’ve been following Johanna’s journey, this is the full story. If you haven’t, it’s a timely reminder that surf trips can be about much more than just the waves.
