Tom de Souza’s desire for surf exploration knows no limits. Determined to take the path less travelled, Tom spent months searching for waves across every single corner of the Indonesian archipelago, all while living out of the top box on his motorbike and whatever else he could fit into his board bag. Tom’s adventure formed the series ‘The Indo Motorcycle Diaries’ which ran in our mag and online.
Since publishing each episode in print, Tom has subsequently released a corresponding YouTube edit for each one and his latest offering is titled ‘Dropped on a Deserted Island With Only Squid and Rice’. You can read more about this adventure here.

While on a mission through one of the most remote corners of Indo, Tom and his travel partner, Webby, get word of a wave that breaks off an uninhabited island. In order to get there they spend hours bartering with the village chief back on the mainland. Eventually they broker a deal to be taken by boat and left to sleep there for one night.
When they arrive they’re greeted by hundreds of turtle remains. A group of poachers had butchered them on a full moon and set the island on fire to destroy the evidence.

Despite the stench, they sleep rough for the night and wake up the next day to score a fun looking left. While it may not have been the conditions they’d hoped for, the reward was still worth the risk. The beauty was in the journey, not the destination.
