Searching for a new wave isn’t as simple as turning up at the first spot you think could be on and hoping for the best. Jed Fasso learnt that when his crew arrived in Northern Chile looking to search through unchartered territory in Patagonia. What proceeded was three and a half months of searching and a full feature length film ‘Beyond Borders Patagonia’. The film has been doing the rounds in 2026 and is continuing its tour throughout Australia and New Zealand before an expected online release later this year.
In the meantime, Tracks has been given access to one section of the film which is now available to wet your surf exploration whistle. The exclusive excerpt comes from the midpoint of the trip while journeying down the Chilean coast when weeks of cold camps and heavy slabs gave way to a run of quiet pointbreaks and an unexpected stay in a crumbling beach shack.

Check out the clip above, then read Jed’s account of the story behind it below.
After driving south for days from the northern tip of Chile, we reached the midpoint of our journey toward Patagonia and spent some time along a short stretch of coastline that seemed to have a pointbreak around every corner.
After spending a few weeks getting obliterated by slabs which broke into half a foot of water, Luke and I were both very happy to see some mellow left points. We pulled in to one particular spot and had it basically to ourselves. We chatted with a few locals who were excited to see waves. They said we arrived on the best day of the year, supposedly because the sand shifted and they hadn’t had banks for months.

Pulling up to a place we had never heard of and finding perfect waves like that was so insane. Luke, Sam, Bodhi and I were in high spirits despite the few weeks of camping in the cold coast that had lead us there.
JP, a local we’d met through mutual friends, offered us his old brick shack right on the beach (the one in the excerpt), a crumbling thing he planned to knock down soon to build a proper home for his family. Old mattresses, forgotten tools, mouldy ponchos, whatever had been forgotten over the years had found its way in here. But to us getting out of the wind and weather was a massive win depsite the mould cough we developed by crashing in there. We rolled out our swags on the floor, claimed the dusty old mattress and called it home that week.

It was great to spend time along these coastal towns and meet all the great crew that resides there, we met Crav – a local filmmaker who also helped us capture the final waves of our first surf there. It was a privilege to spend time in this area. This section of the film is the result of us navigating a few tough conversations, making some new friends and eventually finding our way.
