WATCH: Rio Waida in ‘Pertama’

Indonesia's CT surfer opens up on family life, the Olympics, growth hormone therapy and more.

On the surface Rio Waida is a smiley faced Balinese surfing assassin. He possesses a friendly nature on land, but in the water he’s a fierce competitor. However, there’s much more to Indonesia’s first ever WSL CT surfer than originally meets the eye. A new film by Matt George and Fabian Von Holzen takes a look behind the curtain at the life of the 25-year-old who was born in Japan before relocating to Bali at the age of four. ‘Pertama’ is more of a documentary than a simple surf edit and sees Rio open up on his family life, being bullied in school, the importance of the Olympics and undergoing growth hormone therapy during adolescence.

Here’s what Matt and Fabian wrote about the film:

“Nusa Cana, a legacy rum brand from Indonesia, had a unique idea when it came to making a short film on their brand ambassador Rio Waida. With Rio currently ranked 20th in the world and a household name in Indonesia, Nusa Cana wanted to dive deeper into the origin story of Rio and his against-all-odds rise into the top ranks of the pro surfing. Not just your standard clips and chaos edit, the company, who remained the sole funder of the project, wanted to take a far more personal approach in order to feature the spirit of Indonesia as much as the incredible surfing of Rio Waida. Reaching out to Filmmakers Matt George and Fabian Von Holzen, the resulting collaboration was a very different vision for today’s surf media. Here is a film that slows things down and allows a very unique surfer to share his life, the challenges he has faced and his inner spiritual thoughts as he moves into the future on his hero’s journey.”

Seven free surfers embarked on a voyage to boldly go where no man had gone before.

Not that long ago, in an island chain far, far away, seven free surfers embarked on a voyage to boldly go where no man had gone before. Equipped with an array of surfboards, a packet of crayons and two ukuleles, their chances of success were slim. In pursuit of perfection, they were forced to navigate under the radar of a fleet of imperial boat charters. Despite numerous obstacles, the rebel alliance of wave-riding beatniks continued to make Galactik Tracks into a new surfing cosmos; their search for a Nirvana reaching its climax when they arrived at… The Island of Nowhere.

The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home on the Far North Coast of NSW.

Gathering is a short film from independent filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, the creator of the award-winning left of centre surf films Lines From a Poem, Seaworthy and The Heart & The Sea. The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home in the sacred playgrounds of the Far North Coast of New South Wales. The film explores Rastovich’s ideas around how the tension between the industrial and the natural in the surfing world unfolds in that place. Ultimately, Gathering celebrates how diversity and difference in ecosystems, relationships and surfing contribute to the preciousness of life. Gathering is easy on the eyes and ears and Tracks Magazine is proud to present it to you. Nathan Oldfield is a maverick, a filmmaker who wants a surf movie to say something important, to move us and make us grateful for the sea around us and the life within us. His films are quiet, beautiful and brimming with sacred purpose. Tim Winton, Acclaimed Australian Novelist
