Riku Matsumoto continues to prove why he’s one of the most stylish surfers in the game. The Japanese goof-footer lives and work as a surf guide at Alaia in the Mentawai’s where he couldn’t ask for a better playground to hone his steezy tube threading skills.
His experience in hollow cones helped Team Japan to the win at the 2025 Da Hui Backdoor Shootout, and his style and approach to wave riding was enough to lure Hayden Cox into signing him to his Haydenshapes board label earlier this year. If you look close enough you can draw some very real comparisons to another goofy-footer on the Hayden team. No points for guessing who that could be.
Riku’s latest edit ‘Empty Miles’, in collaboration with his employer, is testament to the life he has built for himself around surfing. The 15 minute flick is full blown Ments surf porn.
