South Africa is like one big David Attenborough documentary. The country is home to a vast array of wildlife both on land and in the sea. One of its biggest spectacles is the annual sardine run which occurs from May to July and sees thousands of sardines migrate north along the east cost from the Agulhas Bank to the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Following closely behind is a number of predators including sharks, dolphins, whales, seabirds, and game fish who wait to feast on the helpless sardines.
In a new surf film by Now Now Media, described as ‘the wildest surfing adventure on earth’, a group of South African surfers chase waves along the same remote route during the run. Here’s what they wrote about the film:
“The journey starts amongst the kelp forests of Cape Town and takes us past Jeffreys Bay, along the cliff-lined Wild Coast and finally on to the sub-tropical barrels of KwaZulu-Natal.
“Along the way we learn what drives this incredible natural phenomenon and join the surfers on a wild adventure as they go off the grid hunting for perfect waves – all while trying to avoid the huge predators that follow these fish. Featuring: Adin Masencamp, Frankie Oberholzer, Micah Margieson, Sophie Bell, Harley Ingleby, Olivia Symcox and others.”
