“Making these edits is so damn fun that I don’t mind going broke while doing it,” Braiden Maither told me as he dropped his latest clip into my email inbox.
“My sister, thank god, films most of the clips especially on Maui and I pay her penny’s on the dollar for how good her work is. I edit everything myself, and somehow built somewhat successful businesses that allow me the freedom to travel and pay the bills.”
Born on Maui, the 29-year-old, as evidenced in his latest edit which was filmed around his home and in Fiji, surfs to a standard that he should get paid for. However, he spends his time and money making surf clips for the love of it. Something which should be loudly applauded in the current financial climate and state of the surf industry.
“Over the hill? Can’t explain why you’re spending money on another surf trip or clips from filmers? I think it’s the pursuit that keeps that child inside you proud and happy. It’s easy to slip into the daily life at home working, cracking beers after a long day, not like I haven’t dabbled in it all. But chasing clips and waves is the one thing that keeps me on my toes and motivated and I truly think it bleeds into other parts of my life in a positive way. So fuck it maybe I am over the hill but I still need to land that next punt.”
