WATCH: Ollie Henry and the Rusty team score in the Mentawai’s

All aboard the Mangalui.

If you’ve been on a boat trip to the Mentawai’s, there’s a chance you’ve stayed on the Mangalui. The charter boat, designed by Matt Cruden and Greg Spindler, has been feeding tube hungry travelling surfers across the Ments and neighbouring islands since 1996. It’s played host to a number of Tracks boat trips throughout the years and each season they welcome a variety of pro surfers who are happy to put their trust in its Captain to feed their appetite.

When the Rusty crew boarded the vessel, with the hopes of filming for their latest movie, the assignment was simple; take us to get tubed. It’s safe to say, the boys running the Mangalui did exactly that. Rusty team rider Ollie Henry has also packed a bunch of the footage into his latest edit ‘All Ollie Adventures ep 2: Mentawais Boat Trip’.

Here’s what he had to say about the trip:

“To kick off this series again I thought it would be cool to start with this boat trip we did for the Rusty film ‘REVIVAL’ that’s just been released. At the time we didn’t know what we were doing with the footage so we made a youtube video. We ended up saving the footage and made REVIVAL. Now that has dropped we made some tweaks to the original edit and here we are.

“This was my first trip to the Mentawai’s and I had a blast, the zone is crazy. We lucked into really good waves which can be hard when you book a boat trip 6 months in advance and can’t see the swells. Luckily for us we were onboard the Mangalui and Captain Lip had us on all the best spots the whole trip! Cheers to the lads on the trip, I had a ripper time and looking forward to the next one! Stayed tuned for more Adventure clips this year.”

Seven free surfers embarked on a voyage to boldly go where no man had gone before.

Not that long ago, in an island chain far, far away, seven free surfers embarked on a voyage to boldly go where no man had gone before. Equipped with an array of surfboards, a packet of crayons and two ukuleles, their chances of success were slim. In pursuit of perfection, they were forced to navigate under the radar of a fleet of imperial boat charters. Despite numerous obstacles, the rebel alliance of wave-riding beatniks continued to make Galactik Tracks into a new surfing cosmos; their search for a Nirvana reaching its climax when they arrived at… The Island of Nowhere.

The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home on the Far North Coast of NSW.

Gathering is a short film from independent filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, the creator of the award-winning left of centre surf films Lines From a Poem, Seaworthy and The Heart & The Sea. The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home in the sacred playgrounds of the Far North Coast of New South Wales. The film explores Rastovich’s ideas around how the tension between the industrial and the natural in the surfing world unfolds in that place. Ultimately, Gathering celebrates how diversity and difference in ecosystems, relationships and surfing contribute to the preciousness of life. Gathering is easy on the eyes and ears and Tracks Magazine is proud to present it to you. Nathan Oldfield is a maverick, a filmmaker who wants a surf movie to say something important, to move us and make us grateful for the sea around us and the life within us. His films are quiet, beautiful and brimming with sacred purpose. Tim Winton, Acclaimed Australian Novelist
