WATCH: MAKANA PANG IN ‘COMMIT’

Son of Hawaiian big wave legend and shaper, Makana pang proves the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Before surfing Pipeline, North Shore grommets hone their skills (and courage) on the Keiki shore break. Keiki produces a mutant and often big and unrideable sand slab that detonates on the shore. At face value, trying to surf here is a pointless task. The risk doesn’t add up to the reward, but it makes perfect sense when you look at the bigger picture. Keiki is the ideal place to learn “to go anything”, and the joint eliminates some of the fear of going out at big Pipe or Backdoor, as seen in the evolution of Makana Pang’s surfing.

‘Commit’ tells the story of what it is like growing up on the North Shore through the eyes of Makana Pang, son of big wave legend and surfboard shaper Dennis Pang. Directed by Cult Gabe, the film is a unique insight into the next generation of Hawaiian chargers.
