Watch: Liam Turner – Living, Working & Surfing in the Ments

An Englishman with the best work, life and tube balance a surfer could ask for.

At the end of 2024 we dubbed Liam Turner as one of the most tubed in the previous 12 months. That title has become a recurring theme for him every year since. For starters, the Cornish goofy-foot is a wizard at dragging corn. Add in the fact he manages HTs Resort in the Ments, which means he has instant access to a number of world class wave, and you get possible the best work-life balance a tube hungry surfer could ask for.

Here’s what Liam told us about the gig back in 2024:

“During the summer of 2021 I was living in a tent for a few months, I was working four jobs lifeguarding, doing bar jobs and working as a chef. That following winter me and my partner went to Indo for six months and by the time the trip came to an end, we didn’t want to go home.”

“We’ve both worked in resorts before and we did a short stint surf guiding and teaching yoga in Simuelue before the job at HTs came up and now we’ve both been here two and a half years. Em does the reservations, bookings and is going to be doing the photography and I do a lot of the guest management stuff.”

Since we last spoke to Liam, he’s been doing more of the same – managing guests, getting tubed in his spare time and he’s just applying the finishing touches on a home that the couple have built for themselves.

Is working at a surf resort in Indo the best job in the world? We’ll let you be the judge – check out Liam’s latest edit ‘Sorted’, presented by Quiksilver, at the link above.

Seven free surfers embarked on a voyage to boldly go where no man had gone before.

Not that long ago, in an island chain far, far away, seven free surfers embarked on a voyage to boldly go where no man had gone before. Equipped with an array of surfboards, a packet of crayons and two ukuleles, their chances of success were slim. In pursuit of perfection, they were forced to navigate under the radar of a fleet of imperial boat charters. Despite numerous obstacles, the rebel alliance of wave-riding beatniks continued to make Galactik Tracks into a new surfing cosmos; their search for a Nirvana reaching its climax when they arrived at… The Island of Nowhere.

Gathering is a short film from independent filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, the creator of the award-winning left of centre surf films Lines From a Poem, Seaworthy and The Heart & The Sea. The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home in the sacred playgrounds of the Far North Coast of New South Wales. The film explores Rastovich’s ideas around how the tension between the industrial and the natural in the surfing world unfolds in that place. Ultimately, Gathering celebrates how diversity and difference in ecosystems, relationships and surfing contribute to the preciousness of life. Gathering is easy on the eyes and ears and Tracks Magazine is proud to present it to you. Nathan Oldfield is a maverick, a filmmaker who wants a surf movie to say something important, to move us and make us grateful for the sea around us and the life within us.
