As far as slabs go, they don’t get much gnarlier than Cape Solander, also known as ‘Ours’. Made famous by Maroubra’s Bra Boys who were the first to take on the spot, the wave is not for the feint hearted. Its close proximity to dry rock, the steps in the wave, the backwash up the face all give it a top tier difficulty level.
One man who has it as dialed as possible is Kipp Caddy. Born in Ulladulla, an area with a number of slabs, Kipp moved to Cronulla, the nearest town to Ours, at a young age. His upbringing, surrounded by a number of gnarly setups, helped shape his surfing. Nowadays you can usually find him chasing swells up and down the country, particularly across WA and at lesser-known spots across South Australia. However, when there’s a swell at home you will also find him in the mix.
When an East Coast low lit up Cape Solander earlier this year, Kipp was joined by a number of surfing heavyweights including good friend and fellow slab hunter Nathan Florence, who wanted in on the action. Kipp documented the session from all angles for his latest YouTube edit which is equally cinematic and chaotic.
“Cape Solander, Sydney’s Best slab, turned on. This slab separates the committed from the cautious. Grateful to share the lineup with a bunch of friends whilst also watching the next generation push themselves,” said Kipp.
