Kai Neville’s 2009 ‘Modern Collective’ was an era-defining surf film. Back then everything was grungier, louder and a lot more in your face. It’s the kind of attitude that has come back on trend in recent years. One of the highlights of the film was Jordy Smith’s aerial display at a high performance ramp on Reunion Island. At the time Jordy was very much pushing the envelope and taking the game to new heights.
Now, that trip has come full circle, with Smith recently revisiting the wave for a surf trip with fellow South African Eli Beukes. The session forms the narrative for Jordy’s latest YouTube installation.
“Being back in Reunion has been really special. It’s a place I have a lot of memories, from Modern Collective, the first time we went and shot with Kai. It was some of the most high performance surfing I’d ever done,” said Jordy.
Smith returned two years later to shoot for his own film ‘Bending Colours’.
“I remember it being one of the best ramps in the world,” he added.
