Being a Hawaiian big-wave surfer and not getting an invite for the prestigious Invitational event must trigger the ego. We at Tracks know how that feels at a minuscule level after one of our risky social media captions are laughed at in the comment section. However, this year, the men and women who missed out on competing in the Eddie received worthy consolations from Huey.
The above clip is Maui’s big-wave surfers last Sunday (Monday Oz) taking on possibly the biggest Jaws of the Winter season. There is nothing more mystical and terrifying than Peahi when mountains of water go marching into its reef. Would’ve loved to have seen Albee Layer in the Eddie this year, who was one of the brilliant lunatics that chose to paddle-in the Jaws session.
While the Big-Wave Event was grabbing our attention on “Superbowl Sunday”, the Eddie swell was also causing havoc just around the corner at ‘Outer Reef’. Hawaiian charger Koa Smith didn’t get the call-up for the Eddie, so he made sure to make the most out of the uncrowded alternative.
