San Clemente has long been a melting pot for surfing talent. Much of that talent is now being harvested and given opportunity through the 2 Percent surf crew, led by former CT surfer Kolohe Andino.
2 Percent started in 2023 when Kolohe and his longtime filmer Jacob Vanderwork began collecting, editing and posting footage of the seemingly endless amounts of talented surfers in San Clemente. It was a chance to promote the up and coming youth. It also became an allegiance of Californians who were battling it on the Challenger to make the big league.
Kolohe took 2 Percent to another level earlier this year when he parted ways with his sponsor at the time, O’Neill. Andino then decided to go full steam ahead on the 2 Percent idea and has since brought out clothing and started making surf movies.
The crew’s latest flick ‘Hijinx’ recently premiered and toured around the world in towns across America, Australia and Japan. The 37 minute film, which is now available on Youtube, is representative of Kolohe’s vision for his brand and features a number of San Clemente rippers who are without a major sponsor.
The move is raw, fun, doesn’t conform to the expectations of your standard surf movie in 2024 and features some insanely talented surfing.
In an Instagram post, Kolohe described it as the following: “a low-fi surf compilation that speaks for the unspoken (mostly unsponsored). The film has no titles. No story line. No bullshit. Specializing in relatable surf. Pieced together by the master himself Michael Cukr. With a soundtrack that makes 25-year-olds feel outdated and want to shave their moustache. From ice spice to gayt to sponge bob to fortnight. It truly is just HIJINX (rule-breaking shenanigans).
“What I learnt over the past month is that core surfing is alive and well. Groms of all shapes, sizes and ages come from every corner of the earth to get free gear, have some drinks, tell stories about my dad and watch us surf on a screen.”
