WATCH: Harry Bryant in ‘Roasted’

"I can shape and mould my surf trips, boards and clips into however I see fit in order to portray a certain image of myself."

“This year’s been super hectic and this little time off has been perfect to just reset for once. Plus, I’ve been treating my body like a toxic waste bin for the past few years and this whole rest, eating good and taking care of yourself has made me realise I could be onto something here.”

Harry Bryant is talking to me over the phone from his recently purchased home on the South Coast of NSW. It’s the first time he’s managed to spend a prolonged period of time in the gaff, given that he’s always on the move. Haz recently had some metal screws taken out of his leg and is dry docked for the next month.

“When you’re constantly surfing and chasing waves, everything else around you just evaporates. It’s been nice to take some time to enjoy this house I’ve got and relax a little bit.”

While his water time may be limited for the rest of 2025, he’s still found a moment to push out his latest edit ‘Roasted’, which was put together by Dave Fox and features sessions from Fiji, Indo and a remote right river mouth. The 14 minute flick comes shortly after Haz’s part in Snapt 5 – The Final Cut.

Locked in on a pacific blue drainer.

“Roasted is really more of a session based film, made up of a couple days in Fiji, one in Indo and then the sessions at that river mouth. It allows you to get into the rhythm of it a bit more,” he said.

“The vibe behind Snapt was that it was strictly A plus clips. Only a few clips from my time in Fiji was used in Snapt and so I realised that I had bunch of left over footage that I wanted to use. From there, I had that one session in Indo which was around the time of the Padang Cup, I was in Sumatra and managed to snag a few clips. By this point, me and Dave thought we almost had enough for something and it just needed one more session to complete the film. Dave, who is like a full meteorologist, started hunting typhoons and we ended up at this super remote location in a zone I didn’t even know had waves, which led to us scoring that river mouth.”

Haz has worked on a variety of different projects over the past couple of years, with the standout being his full length feature film ‘Motel Hell’, which he spent three years saving his clips for. In addition to his Snapt part, he’s also got a part in the upcoming Ritual Vision movie ‘Ritualistic Tendencies’ which premieres at the Hayden Orpheum in Sydney on 3 December.

“The greatest freedom of being a free surfer is that I am my own creative director,” he said, “I can shape and mould my surf trips, boards and clips into however I see fit in order to portray a certain image of myself.

“I don’t feel pressure to constantly put out clips. I like doing things tastefully, I don’t to throw a bunch of shit online every few seconds. I want to make sure I have enough good content to put something together and I don’t care if that means sitting on footage for years at a time.”

Well we can confirm that ‘Roasted’ is another banger courtesy of Harry and Dave. Hit the link above to check it out.

Gathering is a short film from independent filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, the creator of the award-winning left of centre surf films Lines From a Poem, Seaworthy and The Heart & The Sea. The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home in the sacred playgrounds of the Far North Coast of New South Wales. Gathering is easy on the eyes and ears and Tracks Magazine is proud to present it to you. Nathan Oldfield is a maverick, a filmmaker who wants a surf movie to say something important, to move us and make us grateful for the sea around us and the life within us.
