When the Mentawai Islands exploded onto the surfing scene, there was one wave that everyone wanted to ride. A left that offered a mind-blowing tube followed by a wall of the highest quality that peeled down the reef at a perfect pace. It was like something you’d only dreamt about. It was, of course, Macaronis. The wave that played a supporting role in endless surf movies during the naughties and filled pages of every surf magazine the world over.
Macaronis is still there, doing its thing. Less of a destination for Pro surfers these days, but still fulfilling the fantasies of many a visiting surfer.
Nic Von Rupp and Nate Behl recently decided to pay the old girl a visit and were soon reminded of why it was once the darling of the surfing world.
