Eli Beukes is one of South Africa’s finest surfing exports. He owes some of that talent to both his father and the upbringing he was given. ‘Rough Diamonds’, a new film by Now Now Media, follows Pete and Eli’s story which is built on inheritance and started more than 30 years ago on South Africa’s rugged west coast.
Pete’s story starts after the navy, when he headed to Lamberts Bay in the early ’90s to work as a diamond diver. Between dives, he found something better than gems: a volatile, wave-rich stretch of coastline few had bothered to surf. Decades on, he’s passed that discovery to his son.
The coast itself is the film’s real co-star. Kelp covered reefs and mechanical point breaks make this one of surfing’s most rewarding, and unforgiving, corners of the world.
