St Francis Bay was made famous by Bruce Brown’s ‘The Endless Summer’. A reeling right hander on one section of the bay was re-named ‘Bruce Beauties’ and for a period of time it was one of the world’s most sort after waves. However, since the release of the iconic film in 1966, the waves in the area have been in steady decline. However, a new project featuring the construction of rock groynes and beach nourishment is currently underway to try and revive them.
Brad from the ‘Down the line’ YouTube channel has been documenting the ongoing changes in the bay.
“New waves have started to appear — with a right-hand break off the back of the groyne and a fun left-hander on the other side. As construction continues, these waves are looking more and more promising. Even the old beach break further down has come back to life, showing signs of the classic shape it had back in the 90s and 2000s — a really exciting return for the local surf community,” he said last month.
His latest update on YouTube shows signs of a reeling right starting to break on the other side of the groyne. It remains to be seen whether world class waves will return to the area but the nourishment project gives it a fighting chance.
“We’ve got some fun waves coming off of the back of the groyne. The rights are running off quite nicely, it’s the first time I’ve seen it do this. Last week we had a few lefts coming off the other side with a different swell direction, now there’s a nice SW swell direction and it’s a totally different thing,” said Brad.
