Flashback to November last year and a large portion of the world’s most respected big-wave surfers were parked up in Portugal waiting for Nazare to fire. The group were in the hunt to be etched in the history books and ride the biggest wave ever surfed. But, this winter season at Nazare, an unknown man to the masses was one of the highlight performers.
Matt Formston, a blind surfer from Australia who rode what looked to be at least a 20-foot face at the Portuguese big-wave spot. Despite not possessing the luxury of sight, Matt made the rest of us clench fists in our pockets in search of excuses with his heroics last year.
Check out Tim Bonython’s clip (above) who was apart of Matt’s clique at Nazare and recorded one of the legendary sessions. Matt’s inspirational journey is going to be further dissected in his documentary ‘The Blind Sea’, which airs sometime in 2023.
