Most people only see the World Title and the shiny trophy at the end of the year, what they don’t realise is what it took to get there. For Molly Picklum, she did it all with humility, grace, humour, passion and more. If you could pick one day to spend with a World Champ, Pickles is up there as a top choice. She’s a unique, larger than life character and a great representative for surfing.
Need more convincing? Surfing Australia has just released a 30 minute documentary titled ‘Molly’s Way’ which gives a behind the scenes look at her road to last season’s World Title. The short film follows Molly from her early days as a high-energy grom on the Central Coast to the top of the sport, blending early footage, contest highlights and behind-the-scenes insight.
It features interviews from those close to her and others who have watched Molly climb the ladder to becoming the world’s best. Names such as Kelly Slater, Glen ‘Micro’ Hall, Joel Vaughan, Hughie Vaughan and Kobie Enright all feature.
Praising her after winning the Final Five in Fiji, 11x World Champ Slater said: “Molly is awesome. She’s sending it. She’s a great surfer, but what really stands out is how hard she charges. She’s got no fear, especially in heavier waves and she’s really pushing the level for the women. I think coming into this event, that probably put a bit of pressure on the rest of the field, just knowing what she’s capable of in conditions like these. And honestly, if the waves had been bigger, she might have even pulled further ahead. But yeah, Molly’s great. Great attitude, great surfer. I’m super happy for her.”
After an eight month break from the tour, Molly will put on the jersey again this week as the CT kicks off at Bells Beach. She’ll be up against arguably the most stacked lineup of female surfers the tour has ever seen including Gen-Z stalwarts Caity Simmers, Erin Brooks, Tya Zebrowski and veterans Steph Gilmore and Carissa Moore.
