As demolition works continue on the Uluwatu cliffs, we wanted to serve you a timely reminder of what the bukit used to look like during its early days of surfing discovery when there was hardly a building in site and every lineup was empty.
The Australian and New Zealand surf film archive recently released some footage from iconic film maker Dick Hoole titled ‘Sunsets and Slow Days – 100 foot rolls’ taken in 1975. The clip serves up a heavy dose of nostalgia and presents a fantasy land, which those who first discovered the area were very much living in.
As well as the cinematic views of the empty cliffs and waves, there is also a couple of shots of a young Gerry Lopez gliding effortlessly across those seamless lefts that Bali has become renowned for.
