Whatever your stance on surfing being part of the Olympics, there was something pretty special about watching Owen Wright claim bronze over Gabriel Medina yesterday, in what turned out to be a pretty entertaining day of surfing.
There was also heartbreak for Sally Fitzgibbons and Julian Wilson. A visibly distraught Sally was bundled out in the quarterfinals by Japanese upstart, and eventual bronze medallist, Amuro Tsuzuki. And Julian in a somewhat controversial loss to Gabriel Medina, that may be the last we see of Julian in competition after earlier announcing he would be taking an indefinite break from the tour.
It’s all dissected here by Stace Galbraith and Rabbit Bartholomew. And they also catch up with Owen, Julian, Head Coach, Bede Durbidge, and Team leader and Surfing NSW High-Performance Director, Kate Wilcomes.
