Surfers for Climate is riding a powerful wave of change, harnessing the passion and influence of the surfing community to tackle climate issues head-on. Their approach is as diverse and dynamic as the ocean itself, offering multiple “take-off points” for surfers to engage in climate action.
Surfers for Climate understands that on a wave, when surfers take-off at the sweet spot for their abilities and at the right time, they are in for the ride of their lives. Take-off in the wrong spot, and you’ll wipe out. A diverse community of surfers similarly need bespoke take-off points into climate action. Surfers for Climate provides these “take-off points” through a variety of local events and educational experiences that resonate with surf culture—think movie nights, trivia events, and casual pub discussions. These gatherings are designed to build community, increase climate awareness, and serve as the first step in a broader journey of engagement.
Recognizing the rising tide of climate anxiety among young Australians, Surfers for Climate has launched the Blue Minds Youth Program. This initiative offers free, expert-led workshops to high schools, TAFEs, and universities, aiming to empower the next generation of ocean leaders while addressing eco-anxiety. By focusing on youth, they’re not only fostering future environmental stewards but also tackling mental health issues linked to climate concerns.
The organisation’s impact extends beyond the shoreline and into the political arena. With 2.5 million surfers in Australia, the surfing community represents a significant political force. Surfers for Climate actively engages with MPs representing surfing communities, ensuring that the voices of ocean lovers are heard in legislative processes. This political engagement has already yielded results, as evidenced by their work on a successful campaign to ban offshore oil and gas operations in NSW waters.
By providing diverse entry points for engagement, from local events to political advocacy, Surfers for Climate is empowering the surfing community to become a formidable force in the fight against climate change. They’re proving that when surfers paddle out together, they can create a wave of change powerful enough to reshape our environmental future.
