After seeing ‘Morning of the Earth’ in 1972, Dick Hoole and Wayne Lynch reasoned that making a trip to Bali was a better option than hustling in Hawaii. “In Hawaii, you had to deal with the risk of being chased out of the water by heavy locals,” explains Dick. “So, we figured why not try Bali?”
Dick shot the cover at Uluwatu with his trusty, underwater Nikonos camera rig, a model inspired by the great oceanographer, Jacques Cousteau. Dick and Wayne may have opted for Bali over Hawaii but, ironically, folklore has it that the same image of Wayne Lynch negotiating a marbled, Ulu tube inspired the Hawaiians, Jeff Hakman and Gerry Lopez to explore Bali.
