Here at Tracks we love when we see a celebrity surf. I mean what hardcore surfer doesn’t get a bona fide thruster at the sight of one of the Hemsworth brothers doing an intermediate plus lay back snap. Or hasn’t downed tools when a new Insta post of Mathew McConaughey drops of him paddling a malibu out at Malibu.
So of course the news that Columbian pop star Shakira has been shredding the original Wave Pool in Spain had to be investigated. Now for the grommets out there Shakira is known as Queen of Latin Music, and had a massive hit in 2006 with “Hips Don’t Lie,” a duo featuring Haitian rapper Wyclef Jean. As an aside, it’s probably worth checking out a mashup of heavy metal rock God, Glenn Danzig, doing that song. It’s a wormhole you may never get out of.

Another Shakira hit ‘Whenever Wherever’, featured the immortal line,
“Lucky that my breasts are small and humble
So you don’t confuse them with mountains.”
Anyway Shak is now 43 and is married to Barcelona soccer legend Gerard Pique. And just like Brazilian 90s surfer Guilherme Herdy, she is both a ginger-haired South American and a goofy footer.
Unlike The Herdy Gerdy she also has a rather unflattering wide safety stance and no tube sense. Still, having recently taken up skateboarding (one of the most painful experiences I’ve watched on the net) and surfed on a recent trip to the Maldives, she let her almost 70 million Instagram followers (suck on that, Kelly!) know that, “I’m gonna be ripping today,” before claiming after a wave, “That was awesome.” Her Shakira shakas were also on point.
The also actress and philanthropist edited the clip to her and the Black Eyed Peas’ song Girl Like Me which finished off a slice of surfing that perhaps couldn’t be bettered, anywhere on the net. I mean there’s been some largely irrelevant stuff on Tracks about John John, Albee and Meola Chasing Clouds, 15-foot-Desert Point Grower footage and Kelly in Bali, but this, Shakira stiff legging an artificial wave in Europe, well, that’s what where surfing really floats your boat. What more could you ask for, except to see Kylie Minogue pig dogging Voodoo with Shannon Knowles on her back?
Anyway. we leave you with the words that Shakira once sang to Aussie surf legend Mick Campbell;
“Baby I would climb the Andes solely.
To count the freckles on your body.”
There’s something in that for everybody.
