Portuguese surfer Santiago Graça punched his ticket to compete against some of the world’s best tube hounds after winning the trials for the Capitulo Perfeito event last week.
The trials saw a number of local surfers compete during a pumping day of waves at Carcavelos Beach in order to try and gain entry into the main event, which is currently on hold and has a waiting period until 11 March. Santiago caught 15 waves throughout the hour long final and managed to make a number of them count, expertly threading the shifty beach break barrels to take home top spot ahead of Joao Kopke, Francisco Mittermayer and Joao Moreira who finished in 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively.
Santiago will now be given the chance to face off against the likes of Rob Machado, Clay Marzo, Balaram Stack, Bruno Santos, Aritz Aranburu, Craig Anderson, Noah Beschen and Noa Deane who have all been announced as competitors for the event.
Graça will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of last year’s local trials winner Tiago Stock who caused an upset by winning the main event. Stock took down a 50-year-old-school Pipe Master, (Rob Machado) a new school Vans Pipe Master (Balaram Stack) and a novelty wave specialist, Dylan Graves on his way to victory.
