CT competitor Ryan Callinan has joined Julian Wilson’s Rivvia Projects as a team rider and part owner, just months after splitting with his long term sponsor Billabong. The Newcastle born goofy footer will be the first person to rep the Rivvia sticker at the highest level of competitive surfing when the Lexus Pipe Pro starts next week.
What makes this deal stand out from your regular sponsorship news, is the fact that it plays a part in this on going shift away from the traditional big surf brands and into a new realm of surfer-owned companies. With R Cal being given equity in the brand, it becomes a more unique offering which is far removed from your standard sponsorship deal.

In a press release from Rivvia, it reads: “Callinan will not only represent Rivvia Projects on the nose of his surfboard, but will also become an equity partner in the business. This unique agreement underscores Rivvia Projects’ fresh approach to athlete partnerships, demonstrating its commitment to supporting athletes in modern and innovative ways. It also reflects the changing dynamics of the surf industry, where authentic, independent brands like Rivvia Projects are increasingly attracting top-tier talent by offering a deep level of collaboration, engagement, as well as shared ownership.”
Julian said that Ryan is the ‘epitome’ of what Rivvia stands for and used the occasion to also announce his plans to return to competitive surfing.
“His reputation not only in the water but on land speaks for itself. I’m so proud to have him represent Rivvia Projects as a team rider and a part owner. It’s a milestone moment for the brand. To have our first team rider rocking the VV sticker on the world tour is so exciting…and I plan to join him there next year and make it two of us.”
We’ve known for a while now that Julian is planning to return to competitive surfing. He’s been in contact with the WSL to see if he could be granted access to this year’s Challenger Series, with the hopes of returning to the big time in 2026.
Here’s to wishing both Aussies success during their respective 2025 campaigns.
