Tom de Souza is a regular editorial contributor to Tracks. However, in this installation he turns his hand to film and deftly captures what it’s like to surf alone in the remote corners of Australia. Sharky waters, solid waves, unfamiliar lineups and the tyranny of distance from any kind of medical help all factor into the psychological equation. Perhaps there was slim comfort in the knowledge his girlfriend was on the beach watching, but aside from her there is no one around for miles. Ultimately, Tom reaches the conclusion that this kind of surfing boils down to one thing – your ability to deal with fear.
