Quick fire questions with Thirst Trap

Ahead of the Tracks party at the Burleigh Bowlo this Saturday, we caught up with the Northern Rivers based band to find out more about them.
Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Tracks Party Tour is back in action this Saturday as we head to the Burleigh Heads Bowls Club for another night of madness. The show will be headlined by one of Australia’s most exciting up and coming bands; Surf Trash, who are known for their infectious melodies and raw energy. They will be supported by surf rock band Lazy Ghost and Thirst Trap. The night will be hosted by Ain’t That Swells’ Jed Smith, the larrikin voice of surfing culture, who is set to bring heaps of shenanigans. Purchase tickets here.

The first 100 people through the door will score a Tracks T-shirt (worth $60) and there will be heaps of giveaways from our partners including a Burzerk e-bike worth almost $4,000. Anyone who buys a ticket to any stop on the tour will be automatically entered into a draw for a chance to win.

Ahead of our Burleigh Bowlo show, we caught up with the crew from Thirst Trap, to learn more about the band made up of Django on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Sam on lead guitar and back up vocals, Biku on keys and backing vocals, Seth on bass guitar and Will on drums.

Tell us a little bit about the origins of the band?

We’ve been a band for a couple years now, on the slow grind, but we just all love playing music. Some of us met at University and some of us used to play in another band back in the day. So we have all come together to share our joy in music and just have some fun.

How would you describe your sound?

Our sound is always a hard one to describe, but it’s definitely rock, reggae with a little bit of pop and some rap. It’s very similar to your Sticky Fingers vibe, mixed with Sublime and No Doubt.

Do you boys have any links to surfing?

Some of the boys used to surf and skate but not so much anymore, just too focused on music now haha.

What can people expect from a Thirst Trap show?

People can expect to get their socks blown off. We want to play for you guys, we want to have fun, have energy and just have a good time. So expect everything.

Career highlights so far?

Top three highlights would have to be playing at a packed out show at the Zoo with British India, that was such a sick gig, with great memories. Another highlight would be the achievement of finishing our first east coast tour, which was just an awesome experience and probably getting a slot at Best Night Ever at Miami Marketta; that was too much fun.

Your favourite Thirst Trap song?

My favourite song at the moment would be probably Pressure Me. It’s a song that is super chill at the start then when it gets to the epic rap, it seems to get everyone smiling and going “WOAH!” It gets the whole band excited for that bit too; just one big hype up.

If you were to make a band out of professional surfers or any other famous people, who would be in it and what instrument would they play?

Mick Fanning as the rhythm guitarist and vocalist for sure, Joel Parkinson on lead guitar, Stephanie Gilmore on bass and just chuck in Chad Smith on drums.

If you could play a festival with two other headliners of your choice, they can be dead or alive, who would you pick?

Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Sublime. Same vibe of music, it would be a sick night!

The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home on the Far North Coast of NSW.

Gathering is a short film from independent filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, the creator of the award-winning left of centre surf films Lines From a Poem, Seaworthy and The Heart & The Sea. The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home in the sacred playgrounds of the Far North Coast of New South Wales. The film explores Rastovich’s ideas around how the tension between the industrial and the natural in the surfing world unfolds in that place. Ultimately, Gathering celebrates how diversity and difference in ecosystems, relationships and surfing contribute to the preciousness of life. Gathering is easy on the eyes and ears and Tracks Magazine is proud to present it to you. Nathan Oldfield is a maverick, a filmmaker who wants a surf movie to say something important, to move us and make us grateful for the sea around us and the life within us. His films are quiet, beautiful and brimming with sacred purpose. Tim Winton, Acclaimed Australian Novelist
