Title: Rifles

Artist: John Barton

A close call at Rifles in the Northern Mentawai Island.

As we motored towards the line-up, we could hear the hoots as people and boats alike scrambled to get out of the way of the dark lines of water that were approaching the reef.

I stood precariously on the slippery bow of a narrow wooden Mentawai surf boat and did my best not to fall into the drink as all the surfers in my boat shifted their weight around to try and get a look at what was unfolding.

The unsuspecting boat driver in front of us had been lighting a cigarette and was unaware of what was thundering down the reef towards him. Luckily he’d heard the call of one of the surfers in the foreground and ripped his outboard motor to life just in time to spin his boat towards the approaching wave and give it just enough juice to get up the face without launching off the back. As he went over, the surfer – Drew Meredith – held his composure in the tube while no more that 6ft in front of him, the prop churned and chandeliered the lip as he passed underneath. Drew stood tall as he came out of the tube and the boat slammed down onto the water on the other side – causing the engine to cut off. Luckily the boat had enough momentum to just sneak over the empty wave behind it. Literally one second later and there probably would’ve been a much gnarlier outcome to that situation.

This luckily timed image was my first image to ever make it to the pages of a surf mag and even though it’s and old photo, I don’t think it’ll ever get old for me.

The Framing Process

Your Print will be expertly framed with your choice of a sustainable timber frame. Then it will be finished with lightweight, optically clear, museum grade acrylic which offers 95% protection against UV rays. It will undergo one final inspection, before being securely packed for shipping. If your print is not being framed, it will be carefully rolled with cotton interleave and placed into a cylinder for delivery.

TIMBER FRAMES

We have selected three framing options that we believe complement the images perfectly and allow them to really stand out. With both white, black and Tassie oak options, our quality framing suits a range of settings and styles. We do not use basic framing glass, instead, we use high-quality acrylic. This acrylic is lightweight, protects against 99% of UV rays and is shatterproof.

ACRYLIC FACE MOUNT

Acrylic face mounting is one of the most impressive and striking ways to display your photographic print. Your print is mounted behind acrylic and the back is covered with specially treated aluminium. This process will completely protect your image from front to back. Your image is mounted edge to edge and creates a beautiful frameless finishes. Each piece is professionally finished with hand-polished edges. We use 4.5mm optically clear, Museum Grade Acrylic which has 99% UV protection. Acrylic is extremely safe to use, as it is shatter resistant and provides exceptional protection from sunlight, weather and temperature extremes. Once hung, your print floats approximately 16mm off the wall. You can be assured that you will receive an absolutely perfect, high-quality finish. The result is truly spectacular.

PRINT ONLY

Of course, you can also select the ‘print only’ option and frame the image as you please. All photos are printed on premium Hahnemuhle Ultra Smooth Photo Rag 305gsm paper giving each image incredible colours and luminosity.
