Title: NSW Mid North Coast

Artist: Dave Sparkes

I was always interested in split shots, and by 2003 noticed that no one had got any decent splits of breaking waves. I achieved the first quality imagery of them on film, which was fiendishly difficult due to low ISO limitations. Once digital technology came in, it didn’t take people long to catch up. It bugs me that I never received any credit for pioneering this stuff!

Dave was born in 1962 and grew up in Bondi Beach, moving to Blueys Beach, on the NSW mid-north coast, in 1998. He has been a full time professional surf photographer/journalist since 1996, and has completed assignments worldwide for magazines such as Tracks, Waves, The Surfer’s Path, Surfer, The Surfer’s Journal, Surfing World and ASL. He has also done assignments for Rip Curl, Billabong, Quiksilver, Carve Eyewear, and many other clients. He has written and photographed travel features for Outdoor magazine and The Sydney Morning Herald.

Dave has photographed numerous covers for magazines published in France, England, US, Australia, New Zealand, Spain and Brazil, including the highly prestigious cover of the 2005 US Surfer Magazine Photo Annual. He has traveled to many countries for commercial and editorial shoots including Hawaii, Tahiti, Indonesia, Chile, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Marshall Islands, Mexico, Tonga, Fiji, China, Cook Islands, Japan, Mozambique and South Africa.

In early 2005, for Tracks Magazine, Dave covered the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami that devastated much of South-East Asia. Dave has been a staff photographer/writer for the iconic Tracks magazine since 1998. He has twice placed amongst the top ten finalists of the Australian Professional Surf Photo Awards. He is well known for his mastery of the “over/under” or split shot genre, and is considered by his peers to be the leading photographer in this field.

Dave has had images published in several books such as The Moment, Pilgrimage, The World Stormrider Guide, Outra Ondas,  A Wave Away and Archipelago.

His first solo book, The Wave: Tales From The Impact Zone, a stunning collection of images and travel stories, was published in Australia and New Zealand by Hachette Publishing in 2011, to rave reviews.

In his book review for the Sydney Morning Herald, noted journalist David Knox wrote of The Wave: Tales From the Impact Zone:

“ Proof of Sparkes’ artistry with a camera appears on every page, but the book is made all the more satisfying by the author’s deftness with words. He writes cleverly and lovingly of his craft… A rewarding, enlightening and often humorous read…”

Dave currently resides in Byron Bay with his fiancée, Tracey, and is now developing a reputation as a fine watercolourist, having held exhibitions at Tweed Regional Gallery; Grafton Regional Gallery; Lone Goat Gallery; NRCG (Ballina); Coldstream Gallery, Ulmarra; and several others. He paints watercolour landscapes full time these days, with surf photography only occasionally in the mix.

The Framing Process

Your Print will be expertly framed with your choice of a sustainable timber frame. Then it will be finished with lightweight, optically clear, museum grade acrylic which offers 95% protection against UV rays. It will undergo one final inspection, before being securely packed for shipping. If your print is not being framed, it will be carefully rolled with cotton interleave and placed into a cylinder for delivery.

TIMBER FRAMES

We have selected three framing options that we believe complement the images perfectly and allow them to really stand out. With both white, black and Tassie oak options, our quality framing suits a range of settings and styles. We do not use basic framing glass, instead, we use high-quality acrylic. This acrylic is lightweight, protects against 99% of UV rays and is shatterproof.

ACRYLIC FACE MOUNT

Acrylic face mounting is one of the most impressive and striking ways to display your photographic print. Your print is mounted behind acrylic and the back is covered with specially treated aluminium. This process will completely protect your image from front to back. Your image is mounted edge to edge and creates a beautiful frameless finishes. Each piece is professionally finished with hand-polished edges. We use 4.5mm optically clear, Museum Grade Acrylic which has 99% UV protection. Acrylic is extremely safe to use, as it is shatter resistant and provides exceptional protection from sunlight, weather and temperature extremes. Once hung, your print floats approximately 16mm off the wall. You can be assured that you will receive an absolutely perfect, high-quality finish. The result is truly spectacular.

PRINT ONLY

Of course, you can also select the ‘print only’ option and frame the image as you please. All photos are printed on premium Hahnemuhle Ultra Smooth Photo Rag 305gsm paper giving each image incredible colours and luminosity.
