Pauline Menczer has become an inspiration to many, overcoming sexism, homophobia, crippling arthritis and almost no sponsorship to win the ASP World Surfing Championship in 1993. Known for her tenacity, resilience and fierce advocacy for gender equality, Pauline helped lay the groundwork for equal pay in professional surfing. Now, Waverley Council has agreed to honour her legacy by erecting a life-sized, bronze sculpture of a young Pauline doing a ‘surf check’ overlooking South Bondi. While funding is underway the initiative still needs more money to make it happen. Even if you are not a local or visitor to Bondi this will be an Australian landmark everyone can be proud of – particularly given only 6% of statues in NSW are women – and the majority of those are royalty. To help enshrine Pauline’s contribution to Australia and surfing click here , or come to the fundraiser on Thursday, June 26th. You can purchase tickets here.
