Nick Green nabbed the cover of Tracks #issue 603 with a shot of Jake Steele riding beneath a giant, snarling Tasmanian lip. The magazine features an interview/profile on Nick and his award-winning work. Below is an excerpt from the interview, in which Nick details how his desire for a specific shot put him in a precarious situation.
I’ve since Bought a Boat
As for swimming out at The Stern, I’ve had a fair few close calls for sure, it’s definitely not a place that you can take for granted. Some days it’s the easiest place ever to swim but you don’t want to get caught off guard. I walk in solo there a fair bit; there’s this special spot around the next bay from the bluff where the whole ocean kind of explodes on itself. I’ve photographed it dozens of times in all sorts of conditions, and I’ve always had this vision of capturing it from the water. The hard part is that the best lighting conditions are right before the sun goes down and getting in and out is super tricky when there is swell. Last winter I jumped in about an hour before dark and ended up getting stuck, not being able to get back up as the swell started to build. Ended up having to swim all the way around to the next bay, through the Shippies take-off and down the point. It took me about an hour, swimming in the pitch-black dark trying to make out the right spot to beach myself up on the rocky shoreline where you get in normally after a Shippies session. That was scary and pretty stupid to be honest, I’ve since bought a boat.
