Molly Rocket Q&a

Ahead of the Tracks Party at the Beach Hotel in Byron Bay next week, we caught up with Molly Rocket to learn more about the band.
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Following on from the success of the Tracks Party Tour earlier this year, we’re levelling up and heading to the Beach Hotel in Byron Bay on August 16 with a stellar lineup of bands headlined by Gerringong-based indie rock quartet Pacific Avenue.

The party takes place alongside the Byron Bay Surf Festival and Pacific Avenue will be supported by Crocodylus, Molly Rocket and Allensworth. You can purchase tickets for the event here.

Ahead of the event, we caught up with Molly Rocket to chat about the band’s beginnings, their inspirations and aspirations for the future.

The Adelaide-based alternative rock band is made up of Georgie Evans, Ben Main, Joseph Keating and Trae Freeman. The trio started playing shows locally and quickly built a reputation for themselves which has spread throughout Australia. Despite only starting together three years ago, they’ve already achieved a number of goals, including a recent stint supporting The Rions on their Australian ‘Scary Movie’ tour in 2023.

The group describe their sound ‘as a mix of cigarette ash and an old copy
of a superhero comic from 1995 that you happen to find in your mother’s dresser drawer.’

How did you guys come together and how long have you been playing for?

Georgie: It all actually started with our original guitarist, she went to high school with Ben and Joe and I knew her and she actually brought us all together around three years ago. We started making music and then started playing shows around Adelaide and it has just sort of grown from there. We’ve all been involved in music from an early age. I’ve been playing guitar since I was 13, Ben was 16 and I’m pretty sure Joe learnt the drums around the same time.

Who do you guys take inspiration from?

Georgie: We’re all into 90s alternative bands and so we’ve inspiration from the same areas. A big source of inspiration for us was the Pixies. But if I think about when we started compared to now, our sound has evolved a lot.

A lot of my original music taste came from my mum, she played a lot of Nirvana and Pink Floyd. When you’re younger you think its shit, but as you grow up you begin to appreciate that sort of music a lot more.

What’s been your career highlight so far?

Georgie: When we went on tour with The Rions, that was our first major accomplishment and we all have really good memories from that. We also did a show with Pacific Avenue in 2022 and we’re stoked to be playing alongside them again at the Tracks party.

What can people expect from a Molly Rocket show?

Georgie: A bit of chaos I suppose, our shows are always filled with a lot of energy and passionate playing, as well as crowd interaction.

If you guys could play a show with any two artists, who would it be?

Georgie: It would have to a band like the Beatles and then someone completely different like an Eminem or a Lil Wayne.
