Surfing Luminaries
Share the journey, surf, and talk story with a gathering of surf culture’s most influential and intriguing figures.
The Swellians
With their entertaining podcast series and unpredictable live performances, the versatile duo has generated a mass following and become cultural leaders in surfing.
Jed Smith: A celebrated writer and raconteur, Smithy can light up a room with his verbal gymnastics. A roaming intellect with firm opinions on everything from US politics to the art of tube-riding. His deep surf knowledge, quick wit, and talent for spinning a yarn make him a captivating presence on and off the mic.
Vaughn Dead: The former Waves and Surfing World editor has a wit sharper than the nose-tip of a ‘90s thruster. A dynamic performer, Vaughan doubles as frontman for cult surf-punk outfit The Goons of Doom. Whether on stage, behind the mic, or breaking down a historic heat, his energy and humour are pure entertainment.
Wayne Rabbit Bartholomew
The 1978 world champion and pro surfing visionary is one of surfing’s most charismatic and influential figures. A fearless competitor and natural leader, Rabbit helped define professional surfing’s early years, setting the blueprint for the tour that exists today. His impact on the sport stretches far beyond competition, as he’s played a pivotal role in shaping its culture and direction.
Rabbit is also a gifted storyteller and great conversationalist. Should be at the top of any surfer’s list of ideal dinner guests. From wild tour tales to his deep understanding of competitive strategy, he’s a wealth of knowledge and entertainment. His passion for the sport remains as strong as ever, and his ability to blend humour, wisdom, and an unbreakable love for surfing makes him a true icon both in and out of the water.
Matthew Parker (Album Surfboards)
Matt Parker is a dynamic Creative who channels a background in fine art and graphic design to spearhead Album surfboards. A dedicated surfer, his shaping journey began back in 2001 when he leaned into a quest to make a board that reflected his personal surfing style and aesthetic values. Album surfboards soon established a devoted following amongst surfers seeking alternative craft that achieved an alchemy between aesthetics, unique performance and innovation. Successful shaping relationships with the likes of Asher Pacey, Jack Freestone, Victor Bernardo and Brenden Margieson have helped cultivate Matt’s reputation as a game changer in the surfing world. More recently Matt has thrown his creative heft behind the relaunch of Morning of the Earth Surfboards, bringing his distinctive suite of skills to a brand dripping in history and soul. A modern guru of surf culture, Matt has much to share about the interconnection between design, branding, functionality, technology and business success.
Brenden Margieson
Boasting an approach that is at once relatable and mind blowing, Brenden Margieson is heralded as one of surfing’s most influential free surfers. ‘Margo’ achieved a cult following in the 90s as Occy’s good natured offsider in Jack McCoy’s classic, ‘The Green Iguana’. Margo featured in several classic surf movies, including his own bio film ‘Wanderjaha’. Few people hit the lip harder and Margo’s surfing has always been an inspiring mix of raw power and panache. He’s the kind of surfer other pros have on their favourite list.
More recently, Margo has reminded us that a positive outlook and an open-minded attitude towards equipment are all you need to get better with age. A universally loved surfer who enjoys a laugh and a chat, Margo is a great guy to travel and surf with.
Matthew Barber (OMBE Surf)
You don’t have to be on the CT to embrace the benefits of surf coaching and the right advice can dramatically increase the amount of enjoyment you derive from your regular surf sessions. The more you improve the more fun you have; that’s the beauty of surfing. With this in mind we’ve asked experienced coach, Matt Barber, to be on our Metamorphosis team.
