Make A Wave Returns: Surf Every Day In September For SurfAid

The annual SurfAid fundraiser is back, challenging surfers to log a month of waves while raising money for remote surf communities.

SurfAid and Rip Curl have launched the sixth annual Make A Wave challenge, calling on surfers around the world to surf every day throughout September while raising funds for SurfAid’s work in some of the world’s most remote surf communities.

Since launching in 2021, the initiative has attracted surfers from 28 countries and raised more than $3.6 million, including a record-breaking $1.1 million in 2025. The funds help deliver healthcare, clean water and food security programs in places like Rote and the Mentawais, where access to essential services remains limited.

Rip Curl once again returns as the challenge’s major supporter, with Owen Wright, Stephanie Gilmore and Erin Brooks all backing this year’s campaign.

“Participating in the Make A Wave challenge was an incredible experience,” said Owen Wright. “Knowing that each wave I caught helped families gain access to the things we take for granted like clean water made every session even more meaningful. I can’t wait to do it again this September.”

Participants will receive fundraising support throughout the month and are encouraged to share their daily surfs using the hashtag #MakeAWave, helping build a global community united by a love of surfing and the people who live in its farthest-flung corners.

The challenge is open to surfers of all ages and abilities, with individuals, schools, surf clubs and boardrider clubs all encouraged to get involved. The Surf School Showdown and Boardriders Bash also return, alongside prize giveaways from brands including Rip Curl, Boost Mobile, YETI, Creatures of Leisure, Perfect Wave Travel, Firewire and URBNSURF.

Registrations are now open, with surfers invited to commit to a month of waves while making a tangible difference in the communities that have given surfing so much.

Not that long ago, in an island chain far, far away, seven free surfers embarked on a voyage to boldly go where no man had gone before. Equipped with an array of surfboards, a packet of crayons and two ukuleles, their chances of success were slim. In pursuit of perfection, they were forced to navigate under the radar of a fleet of imperial boat charters. Despite numerous obstacles, the rebel alliance of wave-riding beatniks continued to make Galactik Tracks into a new surfing cosmos; their search for a Nirvana reaching its climax when they arrived at… The Island of Nowhere.

Gathering is a short film from independent filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, the creator of the award-winning left of centre surf films Lines From a Poem, Seaworthy and The Heart & The Sea. The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home in the sacred playgrounds of the Far North Coast of New South Wales. The film explores Rastovich’s ideas around how the tension between the industrial and the natural in the surfing world unfolds in that place. Ultimately, Gathering celebrates how diversity and difference in ecosystems, relationships and surfing contribute to the preciousness of life. Gathering is easy on the eyes and ears and Tracks Magazine is proud to present it to you. Nathan Oldfield is a maverick, a filmmaker who wants a surf movie to say something important, to move us and make us grateful for the sea around us and the life within us. His films are quiet, beautiful and brimming with sacred purpose. Tim Winton, Acclaimed Australian Novelist
