Jack Robinson’s Top Five WA Waves

While sidelined with injury, Robbo dials us in to the waves he’d love to be surfing at home.

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Jack Robinson has quickly become one of the most popular surfers on the tour, and with a rise to the top of the rankings this year he would have been on many people’s radar to go back to back at Margaret River.

Alas, a knee injury sustained at the Bells CT event has halted any chance of that, but that doesn’t mean he is out of the title race for 2023, he’s hoping to be back in time to make the most of Kelly’s dream park in May.

Jack’s dominance on tour in recent years has been a long time coming, or at least it feels that way after seeing videos of him weaving through well overhead pits, sporting a bleach blonde bowl cut for the better part of 15 years.  A new found competitive drive is clear, combine that with immense barrel riding skills and his ever evolving rail and air game and you get one of the most well rounded surfers on tour.

Robbo recently shared his five favourite surf spots in WA, the waves the current world number two cut his teeth on, and surprise surprise, the list is full of fast, hollow waves the world has come to know the West for:

1. Gnaraloo, Ningaloo (Nyinggulu)

It’s a special place, and one of the most beautiful waves in the world, from when it’s small to when it’s big! Fishing up there is also amazing, you are surrounded by nature, you really appreciate its true beauty when you are present there!

This provides some clarity on why Jack’s backside barrel-riding is so elite.

2. Jakes Point, Kalbarri

I grew up driving up north for week or month-long surf trips. My parents and I would pack our car and head north all the way to Gnaraloo. Kalbarri is halfway to Gnaraloo and we would always stop there on the way in and back from the desert. I have incredible memories from surfing Jakes Point, it’s a long left and super rippable! This wave is so unique because you can see the landscape from the water and it is both a barrel and a manoeuvre wave which is super cool. My most recent trip to Kalbarri was during my honeymoon, we camped all the way from Kalbarri to Exmouth. We will never forget these moments. My wife had a lovely time surfing the bay, which is right by Jakes Point and a super mellow wave.

3. Margaret River Mouth or Main Break, Margaret River Region

I grew up surfing this wave, it was the breeding ground for my surfing skills and one of the most fun waves when it’s good!

4. The Box, Margaret River Region

The box is insane, it’s really heavy, it breaks over a really shallow ledge of rocks. I surfed the River Mouth for years until I felt comfortable enough to go out to The Box, which is directly outside of the River Mouth.

(Jack’s a lot more confident at the Box these days. In the below clip he’s filmed doing doubles at the gnarly slab with John John)

5. North Point, Margaret River Region

One of my favourite waves in the world. You get a really long barrel right into the biggest aerial section of your life! I grew up surfing this wave too, it was always a fun adventure spending the whole day in Gracetown, surfing in the morning then breaking for meat pie at the bay store, watching the waves then heading back out to surf for the rest of the day!

(Check out Jack going back to back at perfect North Point with fellow WA locals Taj Burrow and Jay Davies.)
