A predatory Jack Robbo welcomed Gabriel Medina back to the CT today and made it apparent to the three-time world champ that he’s a threat to be taken seriously. The two faced each other in the round of 16. The heat started with a tense paddle scrap; a bit of niggle one might say. A smirking Robbo called for an interference while Medina quickly went back to focusing on the line-up.
Opportunities were scarce in the heat, but both surfers had chances to show off their brilliance. Jack Robbo’s high score of a 6.17 featured a deep Backdoor tube with a fierce, Fanning-like snap to finish. Medina might have won the heat. However, after a long, Pipe barrel he fell off in the flats as he attempted a massive rotation on the final section. Jack held down priority and played it smart enough to move on, however, it’s clear a new rivalry on the CT has been established between these two.
Robbo’s got an even harder task in his next heat as he matches up against a fired-up John John in the quarters. John John once again broke the matrix today with a near-perfect 19.33/ 20 in the round of 16.
Florence scored wave of the day with his mind-blowing 9.93 backdoor tube. John John was so deep in the pit, that when he came out it seemed like Kaipo had witnessed someone redefine the laws of physics. With his reality warped, the Hawaiian commentator shrieked, “What just happened?” Three judges gave the ride a 10. Don’t know what else he could have done there, what do you guys think?

Hopefully, Huey can provide 30 minutes of pumping Pipe in Florence’s quarterfinal with Jack Robbo. In his post-heat interview, John made it clear he wants redemption after losing in their last match-up in the Margaret River Pro final. Buckle up for this fixture ladies and gentlemen.

Heartbreak of the day went to Kelly, bowing out to Yago Dora in the round of 32. It was unfortunate, as the waves disappeared in the defending champ’s heat. Kelly finished with a lacklustre 2.43/ 20 heat total, possibly his worst heat total at Pipe ever. The GOAT later shared that it was a “tough day in the office” and will now have to turn his attention to Sunset, historically one of his least favourite waves in the world.
The waves are expected to be a bit smaller tomorrow, but with cleaner conditions. The WSL broadcasters are predicting for competition to run.We might see a champion crowned in at least one division, or organisers could mow through the men’s quarters and then try and cherry pick a moment to complete both events.
