Head Dips – Issue 607

Behind the Cover: Scott Oster by Arto Saari We felt this timeless shot of Scott Oster was a striking representation of the symbiosis between surf and skate – this issue’s core theme. Asked about his interpretation of surf-skate style by ‘Juice’ magazine back in 2017, Scott said, “Surf style to me is interpreting what you would do on a wave in the ocean on land, whether it’s riding down the sidewalk, a bank, a ramp, or a pool. It has a certain flow. People who surf have a natural tendency to carve and draw different lines, and they use more of the terrain. Less back and forth.” Scott grew up surfing and skating in L.A. in the 80s. By age 15 he was a fully-fledged member of the iconic Dogtown Skate Team, taking cues from Jay Adams and scoring photo spreads in ‘Thrasher’ magazine. Finnish-born Arto Sari became one of the best-known skaters in the world. At 6’2”, Arto was a big guy who did massive tricks with style. In 2001 he was ‘Thrasher’ mag’s skateboarder of the year. Injury forced Arto down another path, and in 2026 he is a celebrated surf and skate photographer based on the North Shore.
