Behind the Cover: Chippa Wilson by John Respondek Chippa and I were staying with our friends from Uluwatu Surf Villas, and shooting the final stages for our book, ‘Chippa. By Respondek’. Since we already had a bunch of high impact air and tube shots, I wanted to get something a bit different to add into the mix. Chippa had a sick little twin fin by shaper Ash Ward. The board looked fun and fast, so my plan was to shoot slow-shutter moments from an aerial perspective. Chippa has an incredibly unique approach to surfing… I was simply doing my best to showcase it. I guess the shot worked out! FCS took influences from Kelly Slater’s original K-3 and Mick Fanning’s signature templates, then reworked the flex, foil and tip profile based on extensive testing and feedback from Mason Ho himself. According to FCS, this fin had a long development runway. Due in part to Mason wanting one fin he could use in everything, from his small wave rock-hopping fun boards, right through to his big wave pipe guns.
