When the waves are cooking on the Gold Coast, there’s not many better surf zones in the world. Whether it’s one of the many world class right points, the skatepark-like ramps at DBah or one of the more quieter nook and crannies, there is something for everyone when the swell tap is free flowing.
March has been a stellar month of surf so far on the GC, with the pinnacle being the Australian Boardriders Battle held at Burleigh last weekend which left many claiming it as the best surf competition in Australia, and even, the world. North Shelly took home top spot in surfing’s answer to a biathlon. Four foot of swell, a groomed slug of sand, the spectacular Burleigh headland as a backdrop and boardriders clubs screaming and supporting like Premier League soccer fans made for a magic event.
That magic has continued all week long with Burleigh lighting up almost every day and with a lesser crowd given that a number of the big dogs headed south straight after the ABB to compete in the final Challenger Series event of the season down in Newcastle, with a number of Aussies securing their place on the 2026 Championship Tour. (At the time of writing George Pittar, Oscar Berry, Morgan Cibilic and Calum Robson have all qualified).
Snapper has also been doing its things. D-Bah has looked as inviting as ever on the smaller days and even Kirra briefly flashed its teeth on Friday with 7x World Champ Stephanie Gilmore on hand to make the most of it.
