Rocky’s fact: In terms of rifling pits, the right (when it’s on), can be a far superior wave compared with the left. |

Unknown surfer has since been revealed as Derrick Ontiveros. Sick surfing Derrick.
Rocky–Rights on Oahu’s North Shore is a break that doesn’t receive the same type of media attention as its glamorous sister, Rocky–Lefts. Truth is however, in terms of rifling pits, the right (when it’s on), can be a far superior wave. Sure, guys like Australia’s Mark ‘Occy’ Occhilupo and Septic Tank Kalani Robb have done some wonderful hacks on the left, and modern air boys like Craig Anderson and Timmy Curran have boosted big on her rip bowl like wind effected ramps… But goofy footers playing around on shore doesn’t hold a candle to what happens on the rights that drain off towards Gas Chambers and Pipeline in a north swell. That said, let’s gaze away at today’s “Mondayitis” wallpaper. One thing we can tell you about old mate in the shot is he is unrecognizable to Tracks staff, that, and he’s up to his guts in tube time mechanics. Hand is dragging on the almost vertically flowing wall, back-foot is pressing down heavy toe side for inside fin traction, thighs are tensely poised for strength (but look lose enough to negotiate foam ball bumps), and eye’s – well they are right where the need to be – focused on an exit. On top of all that, old mates board appears to be one of Al Byrne’s ‘Burning Spears?’ If that’s the case, and I may be wrong here, it is probably a channel bottom. Ironically, in the late 1970s and ’80s Al was a fancied Pipe charger and a leader in channel bottom designs – yet here is an unknown bloke getting tube love at Tracksmag.com going right at the relatively ignored Rocky-Rights. Weird? Probably not. But I am.
