Back in 2008 Drew Courtney, a resilient and tenacious natural footer from Umina Beach on the Central Coast of NSW, fulfilled a burning desire to qualify for the ASP World Tour. Courtney battled it out on the ASP WQS for nearly a decade before qualifying, so despite his short reign at the top (two years) his was a solid career. Sprinkle in a multitude of successes on a national and state level here in Australia and add some blistering performances in the team environment for his beloved Umina Beach Boardriders Club and you’ve got a deservingly satisfied competitor. Not one to rest on his laurels, earlier this year Drew decided to slap on the coloured rash-vest for Slimes Surfarama (a local event held at Avoca Beach), where he dominated the Open division in tricky but near perfect six foot plus waves… Devoid of a legrope Drew scored a perfect ten on the way to an epic win. This shot of Drew’s fins out the back power ‘Summer Snap’ is a testament to his grit and determination as a surfer and a human.
