“It’s dead set one of my favourite moves to do and to look at. I look for power, speed and holding the line the whole way, it’s got to be that one line, no break and straight back up into the lip,” said Occy when asked what he looks for in a good cutback.
If anyone is qualified to give advice on cutback, it’s the goofy-foot Australian who is probably best known for his explosive and powerful take on the maneuver which has become synonymous with his style and surfing.
And what better person to help judge the MP Classic Cutback Comp which celebrates the 1971 historical image of Michael Peterson laying it on rail in his iconic red trunks at Kirra.
Think you can lay it on rail like Occy or MP? Well now is your chance to get involved. Take a look at the link above for a compilation of week nine of submissions for the comp and see if you fancy your chances.
Entries close on 24 September and anyone is welcome to get involved, including both filmers and surfers. All you have to do is post a video of your best cutback using the hashtag ‘#mpccc24’ and mention and follow @only_one_mp. Surfers and filmers can submit as many clips as they like and there will be a number of prizes for the winning surfer and filmer, including a replica of the board Michael rode in that iconic shot and various other memorabilia, as well as some FCS prize packs for the groms and filmers and a DRAFT surfboard.
So if you think you can hold your rail with speed, power and in one continuous line like Occy recommends, then now is your time to submit your entry.
The awards ceremony will be hosted at the Balter Tap Room in Currumbin on 4 October from 6 till 9pm. Tickets cost $16.75 and under 12’s are welcome for free.
