The world’s best competitive surfer and 3x world champion, Brazillian Gabriel Medina, announced he would not be competing in the WCT for at least the start of the year. Speculation around COVID vaccination status has been circulating. However, Gabriels latest Instagram Post cleared any rumours, where he mentions he has “made all the preparations medically” and Gabriel “took his covid vaccination during the holidays.” Medina further notes his mental wellbeing and how he is simply not ready to go up against the worlds best just yet. A stark reminder of the pressure associated with being an elite athlete.
WSL CEO Erik Logan has publicly supported Gabriel’s decision declaring, “The health and safety of our athletes is of the utmost importance, and we fully support Gabriel’s decision to prioritize his wellbeing.” Erik further insinuated that Gabriel’s decision will not hinder his chances of returning to the WCT and that the WSL is happy to welcome him back when he is ready.
On a superficial level, the news is a shame for surf fans who were excited to watch Medina defend his throne against John John Florence. JJF is displaying career-best form in Hawaii, and with the high energy antics of Italo Ferreira, surf fans thought they had a true showdown on their hands this year, but it won’t be the same without Medina. Gabriel’s position on the tour will go to Caio Ibelli until he is back and ready to surf.
We wish Medina a speedy recovery and hope to see him back in a jersey soon.
Medina’s full statement:
The past few months have been a difficult time for me personally and it has taken a toll.
As such, I’ve decided to withdraw from the start of the 2022 WSL Championship Tour.
I had every intention of competing for the full season, had made all the preparations medically (I took my Covid vaccination during my holidays) and mentally and physically, but I’m not in a place where I believe I can perform against the world’s best surfers right now and I need to focus on my well-being. I don’t know how long it will take, but I aim to return to the Championship Tour as soon as I am ready.
I very much appreciate everyone’s ongoing love and support. I’ll be back when I am able. Love. ❤️
