Cooly Kids Classic Keg Contest calls on surfers to start 2025 by getting tubed

The best barrels caught on film during the first three months of 2025 could win a number of prizes.
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Barrel hunters across the globe are being encouraged to start their 2025 by going tube hunting as part of an online competition which will run from 1st January to 31st March. The winners from various divisions, including the filmers, will be in with the chance to win a number of prizes including, cash, trips abroad, surf equipment and more.

The Cooly Kids Classic Keg Contest, run by well-known surf filmer Simon ‘Shagga’ Saffigna, follows on from the success of the Only One MP Classic Cutback Comp which Shagga ran earlier this year.

“We had heaps of crazy feedback from the success of the MP contest and so I wanted to keep the momentum rolling. So many surfers and filmers were inspired by it, digging up old archive footage. With the keg contest, the competition will run from 1st Jan till 31st March and any clip submitted must be filmed in that time frame. I want to encourage people to go surf, get barreled, go on trips and go hunting for waves. Get that spirit of adventure going again, because that’s what surfing is all about.”

Anyone can enter. All you have to do is post your best barrel clip to Instagram and collaborate with @coolykids.surf on the post. You can enter as many times as you wish.

There will be male and female divisions for the following categories:

  • Groms (10 & under)
  • Juniors (16 & under)
  • Opens
  • Masters (45 & over)

The clips will be judged by some of the most tubed surfers on the planet; Joel Parkinson, Mark Occhilupo, Dean Morrison, Bruce Irons and Colleen Deane.

“We’re so lucky that so many cool people and brands have come on board. The overall winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize and there will be different prizes for each division from brands and businesses such as DB Journey, Telo Beach House, Komune Bali and more,” said Shagga.

Gathering is a short film from independent filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, the creator of the award-winning left of centre surf films Lines From a Poem, Seaworthy and The Heart & The Sea. The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home in the sacred playgrounds of the Far North Coast of New South Wales. The film explores Rastovich’s ideas around how the tension between the industrial and the natural in the surfing world unfolds in that place. Ultimately, Gathering celebrates how diversity and difference in ecosystems, relationships and surfing contribute to the preciousness of life. Gathering is easy on the eyes and ears and Tracks Magazine is proud to present it to you. Nathan Oldfield is a maverick, a filmmaker who wants a surf movie to say something important, to move us and make us grateful for the sea around us and the life within us.
